"For easy family dinners with my 4-year-old twin boys, I always prepare one meal for all of us but sometimes serve it differently for the boys. For instance, I often “deconstruct” salads to make fruits and veggies more appealing for their eyes and aspiring taste buds. This way, we all eat the same thing, but it’s served in a way that my boys will eat up!"
Tricia, MyPlate Nutritionist
"One of my favorite things to eat for lunch is an egg-salad sandwich. To cut calories – but not flavor – I make it with Dijon mustard instead of mayo and use lots of herbs and spices."
Shelley, MyPlate Nutritionist
"I love to make smoothies for my family! Not only do we get fruits, vegetables, AND dairy in all at once, but it's a sweet and healthy treat. Bonus: throwing all the ingredients in the blender is a fun way for my girls to participate in food prep."
“As soon as I get home from the grocery store, I’ll wash and cut up vegetables before putting them in the fridge. It makes grabbing a healthy snack easier when I’m short on time.”
Dave, MyPlate Nutritionist
"For lunch and especially dinner, I start with half my plate of fruits and vegetables as my base. Then, I build beyond that. I don’t think how I can “squeeze” in fruits and vegetables, but rather, how do I add the other food groups in. That way, the fruits and vegetables are a given!"
Sarah, MyPlate Nutritionist
"I keep my freezer stocked with frozen veggies. They’re inexpensive, cook in minutes, and are an easy way to add veggies to soups, casseroles, and stir fries. Plus, the bite-size pieces are perfect for my one-year-old daughter to feed herself."
Joni, MyPlate Nutritionist
"After a long commute to and from work, it’s hard to get motivated to cook during the week. So I try to cook a few meals and some staple grains on the weekend so I can easily just reheat the leftovers for meals throughout the week. Sometimes I will make a chili in the crock pot and a few cups of quinoa. The chili is great for lunches and dinners through the week – just add a veggie and it’s a complete meal. For the quinoa, I add some into a variety of dishes (like salads, soups, or even my chili) for a nutrient and fiber boost. I also have it for breakfast mixed with walnuts and whatever fruit I have on hand.

"I like to use bento boxes when packing my daughters' food for preschool and daycare. The small, separate compartments are an easy and fun way to include a variety of nibbles from all the MyPlate food groups. I love knowing they are getting healthy food even when we're not together, and my girls love all the beautiful colors!"
Sasha, MyPlate Nutritionist
"Packing lunches for work guarantees I'll have a healthy mid-day meal and it saves me money. I use jars or recycled containers to pack salads. All you need to do is add a little bit of dressing, shake it up, and enjoy!"
